Nagpur, July 18 (UNI): Six deer were killed after being hit by a speeding train near Kanhan railway station in Nagpur district early on Saturday, highlighting growing concerns over wildlife safety along railway tracks passing through forested areas, officials said.
The incident occurred between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. near Tukaram Nagar when a herd of deer was crossing the railway track. All six animals died on the spot after being struck by the train.
Forest department officials rushed to the spot after receiving information and conducted a panchnama before initiating further action.
The exact species of the deer, the train involved, and the precise cause of the accident are yet to be officially confirmed.
The Kanhan area, located along forest fringes, witnesses regular movement of wild animals. While the habitat supports a healthy wildlife population, railway tracks and roads passing through the region have increasingly become a threat to animals attempting to cross.
Similar incidents involving wild animals have been reported in the past.
The latest accident has renewed calls for effective wildlife mitigation measures, including safe animal crossings and other interventions, to reduce train-related wildlife fatalities in the region.
